While Sony has been soaring with Spider-Man with the partnership between them and Disney, with “Far From Home” this year becoming the first Spider-Man movie to make over $1 billion, they achieved another sort of brilliance with “Into the Spider-verse.” The animated Spider-Man adventure brought with it many new animation techniques and was hailed by audiences during a busy Christmas season in 2018. Despite being the lowest grossing of Sony’s Spider-Man movies, it was a critical darling that earned numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
With Sony winning an Oscar for an animated film, it’s not too surprising that they’d dip their toes back into the Spiderverse once more. Late in October, the studio teased that something new was coming for the Spiderverse and soon after Halloween made the announcement that there would indeed be a sequel to their 2018 animated feature.
Little is known about what will be in store for this next film but it’s a likely bet we’ll see the return of Miles Morales in the role of Spider-Man and venture forth into other universes with other spider-themed heroes. Perhaps even some more villains and even some other Marvel heroes. It’s also very likely that the voice cast will return as well, which included Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld.
Here’s what we do know. The film will be written by David Callaham (“Wonder Woman”) and Joaquim Dos Santos (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) will be directing the sequel. The release date for the sequel is also set for April 8, 2022.
