What’s your favorite ice cream to enjoy on a hot summer day? Anything with chocolate? Something fruity? Vanilla remains the most popular, but what if you want to try something truly out there? Here’s a list of ice cream flavors for the brave:
Roasted turmeric and candied ginger
Found in Juneau, Alaska, this flavor came from Coppa, a cafe-type restaurant. Their flavors rotate, so it’s not available now, but at the time, the golden-hued ice cream was marketed as both tasty and anti-inflammatory.
Cardamom black pepper
Cardamom has a unique flavor profile that includes citrusy and spicy notes; it’s a spice found in chai tea. At Sonny’s in Minneapolis, they once made a cardamom ice cream with black pepper, so the spiciness was really prevalent.
Squid and octopus
In Namja Town, an indoor amusement park in Tokyo, you could find a ton of weird flavors at Ice Cream City, which has since closed down. Those included octopus and squid ink, which gave the ice cream a black color.
Pear with blue cheese
On a cheese plate, it isn’t uncommon to find pears and blue cheese, but would you eat it in ice cream form? It’s a staple on the Salt & Straw menu, a hugely-popular ice cream shop that has locations up and down the West Coast. Sweet Bartlett pears flavor the ice cream base, which is punctuated with crumbles of Crater Lake Blue Cheese.
At the Aldwych Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor in Scotland, they make an ice cream so extreme, you have to be at least 18 to order it and sign a waiver. It’s called “Respiro Del Diavolo,” or “Breath of the Devil.” It’s made with Carolina Reapers, the world’s hottest chile pepper. The ice cream looks like strawberry, but that red does not come from sweet berries. In 2018, the shop says business was booming, and someone from the United States even spent $400 to ship a pint of it overnight in time for a party.
