“Maleficent” a Mild Success at the Box Office

Disney once more makes a grab at the box office with not only a reimagining of one of their properties but a sequel to a reimagining of their properties. “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is the fantasy-action sequel to 2014’s “Maleficent” which was a revisionist fairytale where the titular character was made into a more sympathetic villain than the more evil witch of “Sleeping Beauty.” Despite coming attached with such a big name as Angelina Jolie returning to witch role once more, the film wasn’t exactly the biggest hit.

Though coming in at #1 for the weekend, “Mistress of Evil” only had a small take of the box office with a $36 million gross. Not very impressive for a year where Disney has been setting box office records left and right, especially for both sequels and remaking their classics. The budget isn’t known at this time but it’s likely around $100 million given the big showcase of visual effects present within the production.

While “Joker” continues to hold a crowd at #2 in the box office, the sequel of “Zombieland: Double Tap” didn’t fair as well for its first weekend. The zombie-comedy sequel to 2009’s surprise hit “Zombieland” only brought in $26.7 million. Not in the top 10 for the weekend, but worth noting, are the small debuts of festival favorites “The Lighthouse,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Parasite” into a few theaters. “Parasite,” the new Bong Joon-ho film, is worth mentioning for coming at #11 so keep an eye out for this film as it expands.
