Doctor Strange 2 Will Be Directed by Sam Raimi

Earlier this year, we heard the unfortunate news that Scott Derrickson, the director of 2016’s Doctor Strange, would not returning to direct the set sequel of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Derrickson, along with his writing staff, left the project over creative differences, which many fathom may be due to Derrickson stating he’d lean in heavier on the horror angle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most powerful wizard. Well, if Marvel was hoping to ditch a horror director, they’d gained a more notable name of the genre.

Sam Raimi, who broke out as a director for his horror saga of Evil Dead, has been chosen as the new director for the Doctor Strange sequel. Of course, Raimi is no stranger to crafting superhero blockbusters, having previously helmed the highly successful trilogy of Spider-Man films that spanned from 2002 to 2007. So he’s a bit of a natural choice but also kinda perfect for being a director that favors wild visuals and wicked camera moves. He also has a real knack for slapstick, so chances are we’ll be getting a bit more of that darker humor he has been perfecting since his low-budget days of filming the Evil Dead movies.

There’s no telling how long it’ll take Raimi to wrap up this production but Marvel and Disney are currently hoping that the film can still hit its release date of May 7, 2021.
