Disney+ Developing Doogie Howser Reboot With Different Doogie

You didn’t need to be an oracle to know that Disney would be using their new streaming platform, Disney+, to house numerous remakes and reboots of their properties. Right on launch day, they debuted their CGI remake of Lady and the Tramp. Television is not off-limits either, as the platform will soon be seeing revivals of the likes of Lizzie McQuire and The Proud Family. But their remakes don’t just span the Disney Channel offerings.

The platform is currently developing a reboot series for Doogie Howser, M.D. The original series from 1989 was an unconventional medical drama where the lead doctor of Doogie Howser was a young kid, played by a young Neil Patrick Harris in the first role that put him on the map. For this reboot series, however, Disney wants to take a much different approach.

The new series is being developed by Kourtney Kang of How I Met Your Mother fame, a further connection to Neil Patrick Harris. Harris, however, will not be reprising his role. After all, he’s much older now so having him play the same character would just make it, like, a regular medical drama. And the real appeal of the show was that a young kid was making tough medical decisions. This is why for Disney’s latest version of the story, the title character will be played by a half Asian, half white 16-year-old girl, reflecting a little bit of what Kang would like to see in an inspiring show.

No word yet on who will be cast in the lead role or when this series will be making its debut on Disney+.
