Most 90s kids will recall the elusive figure of Carmen Sandiego, the globe-trotting (and sometimes time-traveling) thief that needed to be caught by gumshoes that may be you. Whether you knew her from the popular computer games, the PBS game show with the catchy theme song, or even the animated series, that iconic red hat, coat, and lipstick were unmistakable. Once more, she returns with new media.
Netflix is developing both an animated series and live-action movie for the prolific villain. While the live-action movie will star Gina Rodriguez as Carmen, we still don’t have a trailer yet. What we do have a trailer for now though is the animated series, “Carmen Sandiego.” Watch the trailer and read the synopsis below:
Everybody asks “WHERE is Carmen Sandiego?”, but nobody asks “WHO is Carmen Sandiego?” The iconic woman in red returns for new international capers and a peek into her past.
Unlike a lot of other media, it seems that Carmen is the central focus as the animated series will focus on her origins. Yep, we’re getting the backstory on the mysterious woman who pilfered across the globe and across time. It’s a major change of pace from the games and shows where she was always the villain we or the heroes wanted to capture and bring to justice. Now I guess we’re rooting for her? The character herself is being voiced by Finn Wolfhard of “Stranger Things” fame and the script is by Mark Perez after having previous wrote the screenplay for the 2018 dark comedy “Game Night.”
The first season premieres on Netflix January 18, 2019.
