Despite a lengthy petition and an open letter from the cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Disney is standing by their decision of firing James Gunn. The “Guardians of the Galaxy” director was fired a month ago when old tweets of his pedophilic jokes were dug up and stirred up a new controversy. There had been talk that the decision may not be final, but there doesn’t seem to be any hope left for Gunn to return for “Galaxy of the Guardians Vol. 3”.
According to Variety, this decision came down after Gunn and his talent agency had a meeting Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn for a second chance. The only hope may have been from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige who seemed to be pushing for Gunn to come back, but wasn’t present for the meeting as he was busy and stood by Disney’s final call.
What this means for the next “Guardians of the Galaxy” is too soon to tell, but actor Dave Bautista has stated that if Gunn goes, he goes. The script that Gunn had originally written for Volume 3 was scheduled to go into production in early 2019, but with Gunn gone and the cast up in the air, there’s no telling if the production will be pushed back while another director is found or if there will even be a “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”.
James Gunn doesn’t seem to be sweating much though. Being let go for an ordeal that still has fans and actors behind him makes him a juicy new director to acquire. One studio the may seriously consider him is Warner Bros with their current director-seeking project being a Green Lantern movie. Could Gunn go from Marvel to DC? It all depends on what move he decides to make next.
